Program Description During the 1830’s and 1840’s Washington, Arkansas was a small town on the edge of the frontier. Ladies were still involved in the process of spinning and weaving. Learn the basics of spinning with Betsy. How was wool carded? Why was wool used? These are some of the questions that will be answered in this program. Betsy will demonstrate carding and spinning as she interacts with the class.
Program Format Students are encouraged to ask questions throughout the program. Upon request teachers will receive a package with cotton and wool. Included in the package will be wool that has not been cleaned.
Objectives The participants will:

1. Explore the skill of spinning.

2.Gain an understanding of the work involved in turning fibers into yarn, and yarn into useful items.

3. Students will gain an appreciation for the natural world and the resources available from nature that provide clothing and protection from the elements.
