Grades K-12: Upcoming Programs from CILC


JOIN students from across the US, Northern Ireland and Wales as they present programs they've created especially for student audiences. These 8 programs are offered free and on a first come basis. Preferred audience age, dates, times and registration information can be found by following each titled link.

Texas Pictographs: A Glimpse into the Past Target Audience Grades 2-5 (ages 7-11)

Come with us as we share with your students the largest Native American pictograph site in Texas and its significant importance to studying the history of Native Americans. What are pictographs? What do they symbolize? What can we learn from them? Through this lesson, you students will learn about Native American history and their use of pictographs. From depictions of people to solar markers, these pictographs really do give us a glimpse into the past.

Texas's Blue Beauty Target Audience Grades K – 1 (ages 5-7)

Bluebonnets are the blue beauties of Texas. Students will discover the history of the legend of Texas bluebonnets. Every student will create their own Bluebonnet.

The Tennessee Walking Horse, Ride the Glide Target Audience Grades 6 – 8 (ages 11-14)

The Tennessee Walking Horse was created in the Marshall County over 100 years ago. Nowhere else in the world can you register a Tennessee Walking Horse except in Lewisburg, Tennessee. Our class will teach you about what makes this breed so versatile in the equine world and how it created industry in our community. The World Celebration is held in our neighboring Bedford County. This program will show you what makes the TWH unique and impressive. We will show you the many jobs created in the care of this horse from the ferrier to the trainer to the rider.

The West Effect Target Audience Grades 8-10 (ages 13-16) Hawaii's known by its common stereotype of being a cultural paradise with beaches and a tropical climate. What people don't understand is how Hawaii came to be a common tourist attraction with its urban city of Honolulu and the arrival of different cultures and businesses. This was due to the West Effect.

The After Effects of the War in Hawaii Target Audience Grades 6-8 (ages 11-14) The program will consist of a pre-conference website and activities, an information powerpoint presentation, a video of the project team's visit and interviews at Pearl Harbor, and a game and other interactivity.

Our Land is Hawaii's Land Target Audience Grades 7-9 (ages 12-15) Life in paradise may seem perfect but the truth in paradise is being revealed. The lands are being manipulated to be used for other purposes and development. If you choose our group we will show you an informational and attractive power point on land use in Hawaii. Then we have a video that will show interviews and visitations from Ala Moana, a Mall (business aspect of land use), Real Estate Agent (residential and housing aspect of land use), Ilikai Hotel (tourism aspect of land use), and Barber's Point Beach and Camping Grounds (recreational aspect of land use). Then play a board game and role-play about the ceded lands in Hawaii.

Black Gold in Boomtown Breckenridge Target Audience Grades 4-7 (ages 9-13) For most people, the smell of rotten eggs is a disgusting and revolting sensation. But for us, it smells like home. Come and experience life in a boomtown with an oil/gas economy that affects the daily lives of millions of people. We will share with students the process of oil/gas creation, drilling, refining, and consumption. We will do this from the viewpoint of a town that has ridden the oil economy up and down for almost 100 years. We hope to share with others how our everyday life based on oil & gas effect millions of people outside of our little town.

Poke ME Target Audience Grades 7-12 (ages 12-18) A history of Blood typing and it's discovery will be discussed. The audience will receive instruction on how blood typing works using demonstrations, video and drawings. We will show live blood typing and explain the procedure. We will compare and contrast the differences in conventional blood typing and how they perform blood typing in medical facilities today (includes video of CCMC lab in action). The audience will "type" five specimens with us and a short blood borne pathogen presentation (with slides from the CCMC pathology lab) will also be given.
