Program Description Looking at paintings, sculptures, and buildings, this program explores the forms and functions of different types of architecture and built environments. Through works of art, students examine a Gothic cathedral, a Precolumbian dwelling, an early twentieth century tenement, the skylines of New York City, the sprawling urban landscape, and contemporary architecture at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Inquiry is guided by the concept of how form follows function. Various architectural terms and illustrations are explored.
Program Format 1. The program begins with an introduction to the concept of form follows function in architecture.
2. The first set of paintings allows students to look at Gothic cathedrals. Students learn about arches, vaults, columns, pilasters. Discussion centers on the function of churches and pilgrimages.
3. In the second section, students looks at a dwellings, with two examples: a sculpture of Precolumbian dwelling, and a painting of a tenement. Discussion centers on living conditions, and the forms of the structures.
4. The third section of artworks, students look at paintings and photographs the city skylines and a discussion of urban planning.
5. Next, students look at contemporary architecture through new buildings at LACMA.
6. Program ends with a brief overview of the LACMA.

Drawing and sketching are part of the lesson.
Objectives Participants will:
-discuss the architectural principle of "form follows function."
-explore meanings in how our built environments are represented in works of art such as paintings,photographs, sculptures, and installations.
-compare the various forms and functions of churches, dwellings, and cities through looking at artworks.
-learn to recognize architectural forms such as arches, vaults, pillars, columns, cantilevered structures, and skyscrapers.
-be introduced to basic concepts in urban planning through works of art and the LACMA site.
-sketch various perspectives, shapes, and forms.
