Grade 10-12: The Living Room War: Television & Vietnam

From 1965 to 1975, television played an unprecedented role in shaping American perceptions of the Vietnam War. New technology and unlimited access to the battlefields of Southeast Asia invested field reporters with the ability to broadcast what became known as "bang-bang" coverage. The carnage of the war and the consequences for American morale, both on the battlefield and at home, led to deep divisions in how Americans viewed the role of government, the military, social change, and war itself. Students will analyze documentaries, news, and fictional programming that depict the Vietnam War period from multiple perspectives.

Program Format:
This class begins with a discussion about the historical context of the Vietnam War in the United States. The body of the class consists of viewing and discussing contemporaneous news footage of specific events and covered by television during the 1960's and 1970s. Clips may include but are not limited to: Walter Cronkites "We Are Mired In Stalemate" Broadcast, All in the Family (Christmas Episode regarding Vietnam War), Wiseman's documentary "Basic Training," among others.

Program Description

In 1861 and the call went out for men to join the Union Army there was less participation than you would think. But in the Confederate Army it was a different story all together. Both sides fought in the Civil War, but they were further apart in many other reasons besides miles and political ideology. We describe the differences of both armies and why the "War Between the States" was fought. More soldier's died in the Civil War than WW II, Korea and Viet Nam combined. There weapons were more modern than Revolutionary War, but their equipment had not changed much. We will investigate the Civil War soldier as you have never seem him before.

Grades 7-12: Blood, Sweat & Tears - Civil War Medicine

Program Description

In this program we describe the horrors of the battlefield and the added horrors of the battlefield aid station and surgery. Doctors were not well trained and in most cases speed was of essence if the soldier lived or died. Simple bullet wounds would turn deadly without the proper care. If the soldier lived and needed additional medical care, in most cases, he was sent to several large military hospital from new York to Washington, DC. We instruct the new medical students on 1860's hospital care located at Clarysville General Hospital in Maryland. Here over 30,000 soldiers from the Union and Confederate armies were seen. You will learn the terminology and basic practices and then given an actual Civil War medical case of a soldier that you are responsible to treat.
