SEALIFE RESCUE

See what it takes to care for sick and injured sea animals, such as dolphins, whales, sea turtles and manatees. Visit Mote Marine Laboratory's Sealife Hospitals to observe actual case studies. Using a lively gameshow format, students will learn what it takes to rescue and rehabilitate various sealife. Students will even learn what they can do to help!

During this program, students will learn why sealife rescue is important, what marine animals Mote commonly rehabilitates, how they are cared for and released. They will also discover what they can do to help marine life.

Time required: Approximately 30 minutes

Grade Level: 6th – 12th grade

Cost: $100.00 USD program fee.

Grades 4-12: Prevention of Cruelty to Animals



September 18, 1:00 pm - Humane Society Humane Officer- Denny Hammon, Humane Officer for the Humane Society of Sandusky, Ohio will be present to speak about the purpose of the Humane Society. Denny will speak of the Humane Society's mission that it is an agency dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals, the relief of suffering among animals and the establishment of humane educational programs. There will be time for students to ask questions. Target age group is grades 4 through 12.

Grades 6-12: D.A.R.E. to Resist Peer Pressure



September 17, 1:00 pm -D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Officer Roger Oddo of the Fremont, OH police department will speak about how children can resist peer pressure and live productive drug- and violence-free lives. Officer Oddo will also talk about internet safety.
Students will have an opportunity to ask questions. Target age group grades 6 through 12

Program Description
Learn how your students can use a free web-based simulator and apply mathematics to explore and solve real-world problems in air traffic control. This professional development event will teach you how to use the simulator to apply proportional reasoning and distance-rate-time relationships to change plane routes and speeds to bring planes to an intersection safely and on time. A comprehensive collection of free instructional materials includes: the simulator, student workbooks, videos, teacher guides, answers and solutions.
Program Format
A Brief Outline of the Videoconference1. Provide a brief overview of the project and presenter's background.2. Introduce Air Traffic Control.3. Demonstrate a simulator problem followed by analysis.4. Participants run a simulator problem.5. Participants help to develop and run a solution to the problem.6. Participants refine the solution.7. Explore underlying mathematics behind the solution.8. Introduce the FREE downloadable materials.9. Participants can remain and do a post-conference activity after the videoconference.

Program Description: How high can you jump on Mars? Why is Neptune blue? Which planet was discovered in the twentieth century? Find out the answers to these questions and many more as you tour the solar system with NASA. In this highly interactive session students will use mathematics to explore and learn characteristics of planets in our solar system.

Program Format
During this highly interactive event, students will physically hop around the solar system! They begin by:
-discussing and exploring the properties of gravity with connections to Newtonian Physics
-determining how high they can jump on Earth

Students will then:
-explore connections between fractions, ratios, and decimals
-explore the ideas of proportional reasoning and scale factors

Finally, using the previously determined jump height, while touring the Solar System, students will:
-calculate how high they can jump on other planets
-record interesting and unique facts about the planets

Objectives
As students hop through the Solar System with NASA, they will:
-engage in discussion about the nature of gravity
-complete equations that require both multiplication and division
-write down at least one fact from each of the nine planets
-demonstrate mastery by comparing whole numbers, ratios, or decimals to determine which planets they can jump the highest and lowest on

What is the Sun? What are sunspots? Science begins with questions and young children have many. This program, specially designed for a kindergarten through second grade audience, will help students answer their questions about the Sun. In this highly interactive session, children will illustrate features of the sun while participating with NASA educators. To help review the new concepts, the children will learn a song about the sun. Come along and learn about the Sun with NASA.
Program Format
Students begin by comparing the objects they see in the night and day time sky. Next, they use white paper and crayons to draw a picture of the sun. As they interact with NASA personnel, new facts about the sun are added to their illustrations. As a review, students use their pictures to help sing a song about the Sun.

Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center Distance Learning Scheduling PolicyThe MVESC understands the occasional need to reschedule programs due to changing schedules, inclement weather, or technical difficulties. However, the MVESC commits time and resources to a program the moment a reservation is received and presenters are scheduled. Presenters must be compensated for their preparation, time and travel. When scheduling a distance learning session, the following policy will be utilized.1.When scheduling a distance learning content session, the school agrees to make a commitment to have an audience for the time and date the session was originally scheduled. Be sure to have coordinated with teachers, technicians, coordinators, treasurers, and other parties prior to submitting the request. The Muskingum Valley ESC asks that anyone making a reservation please check school calendars for holidays, professional development days, and testing dates to avoid potential conflicts.2.Failure of a school to have the audience available for the scheduled distance learning session will result in a charge of $25 for the session. Scheduled events must be cancelled at least 24 hours in advance of the session to avoid the $25 scheduling fee.This fee is not returnable and may not be applied toward a future session. This fee is necessary to compensate the presenter for his time in preparing for the session. This fee can be avoided by ensuring that your audience is present on the day and time of the presentation as scheduled.3.The MVESC strongly recommends performing a test connection at least 2 days prior to the event. The school has the right to cancel any program the day of the test if a successful connection cannot be made. In such a case the MVESC will not charge the $25 fee. If technical reasons prevent the successful connection on the day of the session, the $25 fee will also be waived. This $25 fee applies to all MVESC sponsored programming.4.All MVESC distance learning programs will only be scheduled upon receipt of a signed purchase order. These may be mailed or faxed to Leslie Charles at the Muskingum Valley ESC ( 740-455-6702 ). Can you crack the cipher? Put your logic and mathematical skills to the test to make and break secret messages. Join COSI Demonstrator, Liza Kane, in using the Caesar shift, cipher wheel and even multiple shifts in the practice of cryptography and cryptanalysis, the sciences of making and breaking ciphers.Students should prepare questions in advance, based on the information sent to the teacher. The test connection for this program is scheduled on Wednesday, October 22 at 2:30pm ET.

Cancellation Policy
We ask that anyone making a reservation please check school calendars for holidays, professional development days and testing dates. We also ask that the person making the reservation please coordinate with teachers, technical coordinators, bridges and other interested parties prior to submitting the request. COSI will retain a $25 processing fee for ALL reservations and test connections: the processing fee and test connection are included in the price of the program. If you need to cancel a reservation, you must reschedule your program two weeks prior to the show. COSI will reschedule your program or test connection one time before an additional $25 rescheduling fee is added to the price. This $25 rescheduling fee applies to both program and test connections and will be added every time a schedule change is made beyond the first reschedule. COSI understands the occasional need to reschedule programs due to changing schedules, inclement weather or technical difficulties. However, COSI begins to commit time and resources to a program the moment a reservation is received. COSI strongly recommends performing a test connection at least 2 days prior to the event. The school has the right to cancel any program the day of the test if a successful connection cannot be made and COSI will refund all but the $25 processing fee. Program Description
This class is designed for very young students or students who need more practice communicating. As we look at different animals from Alaska’s marine ecosystems, students have the opportunity to discuss how the animals move and eat, as well as where they live and why.
Program Format
1. If the class is small enough and able, each child introduces him/herself.2. We examine a variety of animals from Alaska’s marine ecosystem. Most of these animals will be seen in our tanks.3. As we observe the animals’ behaviors and structures, the class talks about how the animals capture their food and where they live, as well as other characteristics. 4. Students have a worksheet showing the different zones in the ocean. Students attach stickers of the animals to the worksheet, showing where the animals like to live and their relationship to other animals of the same zone.5. Time is allotted for Q&A from the students.

Students will be able to do the following:• Name eight (or more) animals that live in Alaska’s marine ecosystem• Describe characteristics of those eight (or more) animals.• Describe what those animals eat and how they capture their food.• Describe where those animals live and why they prefer those parts of the ocean.

The Gingerbread Boy (PreK-2nd) TEACHER FAVORITE* Students witness the classic tale of The Gingerbread Boy come to life with brilliantly colored shadow puppets. Led by the program presenter, students make their very own Gingerbread Boy Shadow Puppet during the second half of the program. They also participate in a learning activity about gingerbread's ingredients.
Butterflies (K-2nd) TEACHER FAVORITE*Build a Butterfly Marionette and learn about the lifecycle, camouflage, and insect characteristics of butterflies!
Dinosaurs (K-2nd)- Students build Dinosaur Cup Puppet and learn about meat eaters vs. plant eaters, protective devices, and much more.
Anansi the Spider: A West African Folktale (PreK-2nd) Students view a shadow play, learn about the trickster Anansi, and explore foods of West Africa. Traditional African drum beats and narration by Ramatu Sabbatt, a native of Nigeria, bring this story to life.
Spiders (1st-6th-tailored to grade level) - PRESENTER FAVORITE*Create a Spider Marionette and learn about web builders, hunters, really weird spiders, and the difference between spiders and insects!
Exploring Africa (1st-3rd) Learn about the diversity of the African continent through a look at its home, people, environments & its animals. Learn about predators & prey relationships and protective devices to survive on the African savanna. Build a Giraffe Rod Puppet.
Plants (1st-3rd) Build a Pop-Up Plant puppet and learn about parts of plants, photosynthesis, and plants and food.
Native Americans (3rd-5th) Activities focus on three Native American cultures (Eastern Woodlands, Plains, Southwest), the use of natural resources from the different regions, and how these resources shaped their lives in regards to clothing, shelter and even transportation. Students also discuss Kachinas and the Hopi culture in general. Build a Kachina Hand Puppet.
Mexico (3rd-6th) Can be tailored for older grades! Students learn about the history and culture of Mexico and its people through the art of the mask. Learning activities center around the story of a flag of Mexico & ancient Aztec culture, ancient pictographs of indigenous animals of the New World, and the Spanish influence after the landing of Cortez. Students are also introduced to a modern holiday that ties the two cultures together -- Dia de los Muertos.
Rain Forest (3rd-5th) Build a Tropical Bird Rod Puppet and learn about the diverse life of a Tropical Rain Forest through the exploration of the strata and animals.
Africa/Mali (4th-6th) Tailored for older students! Explore the diversity of the African continent through its people, homes, and environments! Build a Malian Rod Puppet.
Discovering Puppetry in Other Cultures (4th-6th) Students are introduced to other countries and cultures through puppetry. Students learn about puppetry traditions of China, Japan and/or Mali with the aid of a Malian Water Spirit Rod Puppet, Japanese Bunraku Rod Puppet, and Chinese Hand and Shadow Puppets. Teachers choose two of the three countries for the program. Students also view excerpts of master puppeteers from these countries. Students are involved in Q&A as well as hands-on puppet building to make this an interactive, virtual classroom.

Grades 8-12: Darfur: Never, Ever Again?

Since 2004, the conflict in Darfur has claimed the lives of more than 400,000 people. If the United States has classified the conflict as genocide and the entire world has condemned the atrocities, why, then, does it continue? What can be done about the thousands of Sudanese and international peacekeepers living in refugee camps and living in fear?

Students will take on these challenging questions and more during this two-part PULSE series on the conflict in Darfur. Participants from around North America will discuss the nature of the violence, the global players that have fueled the war, and the progress of the international community in abating the violence. Students will also discuss what can be done to improve the situation on a personal, local, and policy level.

Ted Braun (bio and picture attached), Writer/Director of Darfur Now will join students to discuss how the film raised awareness about the dire situation in Darfur. He will also provide an updated account of the ongoing violence in the region, discuss what hope exists for the future and offer suggestion on how students can become involved to support the Darfur Now efforts as agents of change.

Program Format

Videoconference Format:

I. Introduction
GNG moderator opens the videoconference and thanks all participants. Moderator also gives a general breakdown of the conference.

II. Background on Darfur
GNG moderator and/or invited guest will provide a short background on Darfur. This presentation will include videos and other visuals to enhance the learning experience for the students.

III. Interactive Student Dialogue
Students will begin by responding to the GNG moderator’s and/or the guest speaker’s questions about the program topic related to Darfur (sample questions will be provided for each videoconference that directly relate to the topic of the day). Students will then pose questions to one another and engage in direct dialogue about the topic. This exchange will constitute the majority of the session.

IV. Conclusion
Moderator thanks all students for participating and allows interactive sites to make closing remarks.
