Gr 6-12 La Musica de Mexico

Students explore a variety of genres of Mexican music including son jarocho, mariachi, ranchera, norteno, and Mexican classical music in this highly interactive, hands on videoconference with the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Objectives:
Students will explore Mexican culture through music.
Students will compare and contrast a variety of styles of music from Mexico.
Students will identify the influence of Mexican music in the United States.

Program Format:
1.Activity: Students compare and contrast two versions of La Bamba, one rock n roll and one son jarocho.
2.Discussion: The heritage of Mexican music.
3.Activity: Distinguishing between duple and triple meter.
4.Discussion: Mariachi
5.Activity: Identifying the use of sesquialtera in Mariachi music.
6.Discussion: Norteno
7.Activity: Students demonstrate understanding of theme and variations in conjunto music through music.
8.Live music demonstration: Classical music from a Mexican composer

Surgical Suite Schedule

Cameras take you into an operating room at Mount Carmel Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, for a live total knee replacement. Includes a teacher kit with materials to conduct both pre- and post-visit activities, plus booklets for students to use during the program. $280 per connection (including kit for 30 students). Programs take place at 8:45 am and 11 am ET. For grades 6 and up. Program presented by Mount Carmel East, West and St. Ann's andNYLF.

Autopsy Schedule

Follow a videotape of an actual autopsy accompanied by live narration by a forensic pathologist. Participants must work through the "case" and solve for cause of death. In Depth: Autopsy won the American Association of Museum’s Gold MUSE award for excellence. $295 per connection (including kit for 30 students). 90 minutes. Programs take place at 9:00am, 11:00am, and 1:30pm ET. For grades 10 and up. Program supported by NYLF.

New Energy Program

This fall, COSI will offer a new program for PreK-2 students featuring the exciting world of energy. Specifically designed for younger children, this new interactive videoconference will feature bugs, solar power, an energy video tour of COSI, and more.
