Program Description
It is 1774. England’s American colonies have been having some trouble with the mother country...but all that will be set aside, if only briefly, to celebrate the Christmas season. Meet a Virginia family as they gather to celebrate Christmas of 1774, and learn how their traditions are similar and different from modern ones. Your class will have the opportunity to meet members of a Virginia family who are gathering to celebrate Christmas. The family members will share their own method of celebrating the holidays and teach students how to create colonial crafts, decorations, and gifts. They will share some holiday songs with your class that you may or may not be familiar with. The program will begin with a brief introduction by the people of the past. Then, the people of the past will open the discussion to the students, who will have prepared questions as a pre-program activity. The people of the past will answer each student’s question from their perspective. Then, if time allows, the people of the past will ask the students to draw comparisons between their lives and life as described by the person of the past.
