PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Students learn about the history and culture of Mexico and its people through the art of the mask. Learning activities center around the story of a flag of Mexico & ancient Aztec culture, ancient pictographs of indigenous animals of the New World, and the Spanish influence after the landing of Cortez. Students are also briefly introduced to a modern holiday that ties the two cultures together -- Dia de los Muertos.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Learning activities about different Native American cultures will take place while students create their very own Hopi Kachina Hand Puppet. Activities focus on three Native American cultures (Eastern Woodlands, Plains, Southwest), the use of natural resources from the different regions, and how these resources shaped their lives in regards to clothing, shelter and even transportation. Students also discuss Kachinas and the Hopi culture in general. This is a great arts and social studies lesson all in one!

Grades 7-12: El Día de los Muertos


El Día de los Muertos (Day of Dead) is being offered October 14th-November 6th, 2009. This interactive video conference will introduce students to El Día de los Muertos (Day of Dead) and explain how it is celebrated in Mexico.

Elementary students will create movable paper esqueletos (skeletons) during the conference.

Middle and high school students will make calaveras. "Calavera" in Spanish means "skull" and also refers to humorous imaginary poetic obituaries printed in newspapers and used to poke fun at people who are still living (such as politicians or other public figures). Students will create their poems ahead of time, and have the opportunity to illustrate them during the video conference.

Grades 3-12: Intro to Judaism from Jerusalem!



A highly interactive, student-friendly overview of Judaism is presented through the investigation of Jewish ritual objects. The session will focus on the historical/theological foundations of Judaism, Jewish holidays and daily practices. Time will be allocated for questions.

The presenter is a Jerusalem-based ordained rabbi with over 30 years experience as an elementary/middle school educator in the United States and Israel.

Program Format: Jewish ritual objects will be used as a visual focus to present the historical and theological foundations of Judaism, as well as daily and holiday practices, in a highly interactive format. Objects to be presented include: Torah scroll (replica), Tzitzit (fringes), Tallit (prayer shawl), Tefillin (phylacteries), Sabbath candles, Kiddush cup for Sabbath, Shofar (ram’s horn), Megillah on parchment (Story of Esther), Mezuzah parchment (placed on doorposts of Jewish homes), Kippah or Yarmulka (head covering), and Chanukah Menorah (candelabra). A Hebrew Bible and volume from the Talmud will also be presented.

News from Israel can be found in the media on an almost daily basis. Our students, as Americans, often find the news somewhat confusing due to a lack of understanding of life in the Middle East in general, and life in Israel in particular.

Through a review and discussion of Israeli current events, complete with analysis of online media clips and newspaper articles, students will share in the day-to-day Israeli experience. Under the guidance of a Jerusalem-based Israeli educator, students will unravel the intricacies of the Israeli political system, sense the great joys and challenges of Israeli life, and begin to understand Israeli society and the forces that mold it.

Students will use INFOhio's electronic resources to research and then collaborate by using lesson plans already created and found at Education World, Students, grades 5 - 8, should be familiar with INFOhio's electronic resources before the activity begins.

The Premise:

The U.S. Congress has decided to change the name of the holiday celebrated on the last Thursday in November. The name "thanksgiving" doesn't capture the entire spirit of the day. The holiday should be a day for more than just giving thanks. Congress has asked your class to help choose a better name.
Working in teams your class will brainstorm what Thanksgiving is all about, research customs and experiences, identify character traits that might be demonstrated in our thanksgiving practices, and choose a new name for the holiday.

The following curriculum standards are met with this activity-

Content Area: English Language Arts - Writing
Standard: 04. Research
Students define and investigate self-selected or assigned issues, topics and problems. They locate, select and make use of relevant information from a variety of media, reference and technological sources. Students use an appropriate form to communicate their findings.

Homecoming Mum Mania Grade: 9th-12th

Fall means homecoming! Giving and wearing mum corsages for this special occasion is observed almost exclusively in the south. The program features the history of this uniquely southern tradition and highlights the Chrysanthemum's role in various cultures in the past and today. Students will meet Dr. Brooke Byerley to take a closer look at the botany of the chrysanthemum and discover even more interesting facts about this member of the Asteraceae (compositae) Sunflower or Daisy family,one of the top three largest plant families on Earth. If you teach more than one class, BRIT will remain connected to deliver this program at the same site at multiple times to accomodate your class schedule for a discounted fee of $40.00 per additional program. Explore the amazing world of animal skulls through a close up examination of a variety of different skulls. Learn how to identify predators and prey and look for various adaptations that make each animal unique.
