Program Description This program deals specifically with the European Union--who is a member, how it came into existence, how it is governed, and its relations with the US.
Program Format 1. Program with a description of the European Union (EU), including current members and history
2. We will then discuss the structure of the EU institutions and how they interact
3. We will then talk about the euro and its role in the current global financial system
4. We will talk about the ties between the EU and the US, including your state (if requested)
5. Time is allowed for questions and answers
Objectives The participant will:
--Engage in a discussion about the importance of integration of modern Europe
--Gain an understanding for how the European Union works
--Develop an appreciation for the importance of the European Union to Americans

NSS-EC.9-12.16: ROLE OF GOVERNMENT
At the completion of Grade 12, students will know the Grade 4 and Grade 8 benchmarks for this standard, and also understand:
--Governments provide an alternative method to markets for supplying goods and services when it appears that the benefits to society of doing so outweigh the costs to society. Not all individuals will bear the same costs or share the same benefits of those policies.
--A government policy to correct a market imperfection is not justified economically if the cost of implementing it exceeds its expected net benefits.

GHW.10: States, Nations and Nation-States
--Students will analyze and evaluate the physical and human geographic factors that contribute to the formation of states (countries) and the forces that function to either unite and bind a country together or to divide a country.

--Students will understand the means by which economic performance is measured.
E.6: Money and the Role of Financial Institutions
--Students will understand the role of money and financial institutions in a market economy.
E.7: Economic Stabilization
--Students will understand the macroeconomic role of the government in developing and implementing economic stabilization policies and how these policies impact the economy.
E.8: Trade
--Students will understand why individuals, businesses and governments trade goods and services and how trade affects the economies of the world.
