Program Description
The Chinese New Year is the most colorful and important of China’s festivals. The New Year may occur as early as January 21, and as late as February 21. Students will identify the importance of celebrating the New Year. They will also understand traditions and rituals, including paper cutting, special decorations, foods, and activities. The Lantern Festival concludes the New Years celebration. Students will learn the traditional meaning of lanterns in Chinese culture.
Program Format
1. 5 minute introduction2. 15-20 minutes of interaction with students3. 5 minutes for wrap-up and questions
Objectives
The participant will "travel" to China.They will "visit" Beijing and Wuhan.They will develop an appreciation for the Chinese written language.

State Standards to which this program aligns
In Kansas, the Task Force on Chinese Language Training in 2006 set the following goals: • By 2011, all K-12 students in Kansas should have the opportunity for exposure to Mandarin Chinese, whether in traditional classroom settings, through interactive distance learning (IDL) or other distance learning platforms, in after-school and summer programs, or as a part of introductory would language sessions.• By 2016, Mandarin Chinese should be one of the three most-taught languages in Kansas schools, measured both by the number of students enrolled and by the number of schools offering the language.
Program Length
K-5 programs are 30 minutes in length. 6-12 programs are 30-45 minutes in length.
