Program Description Students will learn about the Intepid's function as a floating airport by examining the ship's design, viewing video of launches and recovery of aircraft on the flight deck and examining historic photographs. Students will further compare and contrast aircraft from the Museum's collection and discover how ordinary objects are affected by physical forces that make flight possible.
Program Format 1. This program starts with a description of Intrepid.
2. Students watch a video about aircraft carrier flight deck operations.
3. Students examine historic photographs.
4. Students compare/contrast aircraft design.
5. Students conduct experiments.
Objectives Students will be able to:
- Understand the function of an aircraft carrier
- Identify parts of an airplane
- Compare and contrast aircraft in Intrepid's collection
- Recognize aircraft design elements and changes over time
- Use various materials to demonstrate how physics makes flight possible
