Minimum Technology Specifications for sites connecting to this provider Partner schools have the option of connecting to Manhattan School of Music’s Distance Learning Program either via H.320/ISDN or H.323/IP videoconferencing technology.* Mpeg-2 and Internet2 connectivity is also currently available. It is required that a minimum bandwidth connection of 384Kbps be made in order to make these musical offerings valuable and educationally effective for partner school students.

* Please note that we recently disconnected our H.320/ISDN connection. However, we are still capable of achieving connectivity with ISDN users via the use of a bridge; this expense must be assumed by the partner school.

As videoconferences with live music are more technically demanding than typical “talking head” videoconferences, Manhattan School of Music requires: 1) a brief network connection test (10–15 minutes) upon confirmation of a scheduled program and 2) a sound check/dress rehearsal (15–30 minutes) in order to optimize each program to a specific partner school, no later that one week prior to presentation. A media specialist/videoconference coordinator must be available at the partner school during this sound check/dress rehearsal in order to give feedback on various technical aspects such as network connectivity, sound and video quality, etc. Partner school teacher(s) do not need to be available for this portion of the project. Every effort will be made to streamline this process; however, all pre-program testing is crucial to ensure the best possible presentation to each partner school.

In addition, while the scheduled program takes place, it is required that a media specialist/videoconference coordinator be present on some form of secondary conference communication in order to properly relay and facilitate any exchange of information regarding the various technical aspects of the connection to the coordinator at Manhattan School of Music. Acceptable forms of secondary conference communication include any and all instant message services or cell phone texting; phone calls are not acceptable.
