Grades 4-8: Programs from Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum


Life at Sea (4th-8th grade)

Experience what life at sea was like for the brave sailors who served aboard the USS Intrepid. Students will be historians and interpret primary sources including WWII artifacts, photographs, and testimonies from former crew members. Students will write letters to a former crew member telling him what they learned from their program. By uncovering fascinating facts about the daily lives of these sailors, students will gain a profound understanding of what life at sea encompassed.

Take Flight (4th-8th grade)

Transform your classroom into a pilot’s Ready Room! Your students will experience the world of Aviation by discovering Intrepid’s function as a floating airport. Students will uncover the science of flight by engaging in hands on activities that allow them to hypothesize, experiment and theorize on how flight is accomplished. They will also examine the Museum’s historic aircraft comparing and contrasting propeller and jet driven planes. Scientific materials supplied by the Museum will provide a unique experience in the classroom!

Intrepid Journeys (4th-8th grade)

Your students will control the helm of an aircraft carrier on a thrilling exploration of the high seas! Students will follow Intrepid’s historic voyage from Virginia to California during WWII. In this interactive experience, students use primary sources to discover the fascinating situations that Intrepid crew members encountered as they participated in this expedition. Students are immersed in Intrepid’s history by plotting latitude and longitude, discussing natural and man-made geographical features of North America and examining historic photographs and film footage.

Days: Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays throughout the spring

Times: 9:30am, 11:00am and 1:00pm EST

Target Audience: Students in 4th-8th grades

Cost: Early Bird Special of $135.00 if you register by January 31. $150.00 after.
