Program Description Outline of Subject Matter for VideoConfere: ''A Change in the Air'':

• Earth’s Atmosphere, components and functions
• Experiment: ‘The greenhouse effect’
• The earth’s past climates
• Factors that influence the earth’s climate
• The atmosphere’s components since Industrialization
• Observed changes and expected changes in the next 100 years
• Pollution: air, water, weather, and ecosystems
• Impacts: dropping water levels, rising sea levels, North & South Poles, Ocean Conveyor Belt, Extreme weather events
• Solutions: “How to reduce my GHG’s!”
Program Format The videoconference includes animated graphics and video. Participants can ask questions throughout the presenation. The videoconconference is concluded with an interactive activity on solutions to reduce pollution and greenhouse gases.
Objectives The general objective of this activity is to make students more aware and proactive concerning their environment, while gathering the three levels of learning: cognitive, sensory, and emotional.

During the activity, students:

Cognitive
Are introduced to the basics and history of the earth’s climate
Gain an understanding of the principle of the greenhouse effect
Make a connection between human activities and an increase of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions

Sensory
Do experiments that explore the greenhouse effect
Become acquainted with the connections between greenhouse gases, global warming and extreme weather events

Emotional
Develop curiosity about the earth’s climate
Hear from students of our changing climate, in other parts of country
Become involved to adopt behaviors that reduce GHG emissions
National Standards to which this program aligns Pan-Canadian Educational Curriculum
