Program Description More than a "how to," Creating Graphic Novels 101 will also showcase how Art History around the world has influenced Graphic Novels, Manga, and Comic Books today. Students will be taught techniques, story building, and will be encouraged to interact frequently with the instructor. Each student will be responsible for his/her own book teaser (small preview comic book) or, if a student is not comfortable with drawing but would rather write, he/she may pair up with another student who will serve as artist. Both members of the team should expect to contribute equally. Stories will be shared, and the instructor will guide the students their artistic and story writing endeavors.
Program Format 1) Students are given a briefing on the day's instructions, and what the class will entail. Note: In each session they will also be briefed on supplies and resources needed for the next session.
2) The instructor shares examples of images from her resources as appropriate to the lesson.
3) Instructor provides the Art-Historical/Cultural connections that link students’ favorite books to the present.
4) Instruction on drawing, design, layout, and writing techniques in every class. Student participation is crucial.
5 Q&A throughout/ opportunities for individual consultation with instructor.
6) Students will share their progress with instructor during videoconference.
