Program Description Do you ever wonder why we celebrate Thanksgiving? Or perhaps you would like to know why we hang stockings at Christmas or put up Christmas trees. This electronic field trip will explore those holiday customs and traditions celebrated by Americans.
Program Format 1. The program begins with music and a brief introduction.
2. The presenter will discuss the most popular holiday customs and traditions in America.
3. Students will be asked some basic information and encouraged to respond.
4. The teacher calls on individual students to respond.
5. Students will be asked to note new vocabulary words learned during the program.
5. Students will be encouraged to ask their own questions.
Objectives -To help students understand the origins of many of the customs and traditions we enjoy today.
-To learn some of the unusual rules for manners in the early 1800s and discuss how they may have changed for modern day children.
-To learn about the trials experienced by the first Pilgrims and the eventual peaceful co-existence they developed with the Native Americans.
-To learn about the new foods introduced to the Pilgrims by the Indians and how we enjoy them today.
-To learn how the practice of gift-giving has changed through the years.
-To find out the differences between celebrating Christmas then and now.
