Program Description The program begins with an exploration of the background of the "Little House on the Prairie" story. Several activities will be introduced throughout the program that include: a graphic organizer activity about the Homestead Act of 1862, map skills, complete a timeline and construct some pioneer projects. In closing, a rap that summarizes the program will be performed.
Program Format 1. An introductory rap presented by Mrs. Mills will open the program.
2. There will be a backgound discussion of the time period when the book "Little House on the Prairie" takes place.
3. An activity related to the Homestead Act of 1862 will be introduced.
4. Students will actively participate in a mapping activity.
5. A pictorial show of the historical site of Laura's house on the prairie will be shown.
6. Students will compare and contrast homes from 1869 to 2010.
7. Students will make a "pioneer window" from a brown paper bag.
8. A timeline from 1867-1871 will be discussed and students will draw pictures to illustrate various events.
9. Students have the opportunity to watch how the pioneer child's game "the buzzsaw" is made and if materials are available, each child can make one.
10. Closing rap summarizing the program.
Objectives The student will:
-discuss the history behind the book "Little House on the Prairie
-explore the Homestead Act of 1862
-track the Ingalls family on the trip they made by covered wagon
-compare and contrast 1869 cabin with homes of today
-construct a pioneer cabin window and a common pioneer game.
-complete a timeline by drawing simple pictures that depict special events
