Program Description
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! Is it really true that no two snowflakes are alike? Investigate the intricacies of the individual flake as you view and discuss how American artists have depicted the beauty and wonder of snow and ice in paintings and photographs from the Carter’s collection. Then create your own winter wonders as you learn how to cut complex six-pointed snowflakes. (Snowflake instructions and demonstration provided.)
Program Format
1. View and discuss the ways in which snow and ice have been depicted in fine art.2. Discover the physical composition and structure of ice crystals and snow flakes (geometry and physical science connections)3. Explore the history and method for first snow flake photographs.4. View and discuss contemporary snow flake photographs.5. Uncover the truth about the symmetry and exact sameness of all snowflakes. 6. Create intricate six-point snow flakes.
Objectives
-Appreciate the beauty of winter snow scenes in fine art.-Discover the physical composition and structure of ice crystals and snow flakes.-Explore the history and methodology for micro-photography.-Apply principles of geometry in observing and duplicating the structure and symmetry of snowflakes.
