Grades 3-6: Valentine Herbaria by Botanical Research Institute of Texas

Description: BRIT provides your students with more interesting botanical facts about the plants that play an important role in our holiday traditions. Combining art, science, social studies, and language arts, this program uses BRIT’s version of the well known “Roses are Red” Valentine’s Day poem to teach botanical facts about roses, violets, and of course, sugar. The broadcast includes an opportunity for students to discuss the poem after it is read to distinguish the difference between botanical facts, ethnobotany (the uses of plants), and historical and cultural facts. The program ends with the opening of a "box of chocolates" offering even more plant surprises, botanical facts, their uses, and history in the form of a pop-up book. Teachers digitally receive background information, all necessary materials for the broadcast, and templates for the pop-up book to take the students program experience beyond the broadcast.
