Program Description

The Wollemi pine lived 60 - to 100 million years ago and was believed to have died out with the dinosaurs. Discover the world's rarest tree and the efforts to bring it back from the edge of extinction. How does this tree relate to modern plants and other "living fossils?" Investigate what lessons the Wollemi might have for other species on the threshold of extinction, like many North American Species-at-Risk (SAR) that make Royal Botanical Gardens their home.
Program Format

1. We examine which dinosaurs roamed the earth 100 million years ago and what plants were around then.2. We explore how the Wollemi pine was discovered and the environment in which it was found. 3. We examine the normal and not-so-normal characteristics of the Wollemi pine.4. We explore the time line of plants in particular the evolution of the Wollemi pine from the early Triassic Period to now.5. We discuss the conservation methods used with the Wollemi pine and the connection to efforts RBG is taking to restoring species-at-risk.
Objectives

The participant will:- explore how the Wollemi pine was discovered- examine the evolution of the Wollemi pine- compare plants then to plants now- engage in a discussion about human impacts on plants and the value of conserving them- develop an appreciation of the impact, positive and negative, we have on the world around us
