Grades 7-12: Blood, Sweat & Tears - Civil War Medicine

Program Description

In this program we describe the horrors of the battlefield and the added horrors of the battlefield aid station and surgery. Doctors were not well trained and in most cases speed was of essence if the soldier lived or died. Simple bullet wounds would turn deadly without the proper care. If the soldier lived and needed additional medical care, in most cases, he was sent to several large military hospital from new York to Washington, DC. We instruct the new medical students on 1860's hospital care located at Clarysville General Hospital in Maryland. Here over 30,000 soldiers from the Union and Confederate armies were seen. You will learn the terminology and basic practices and then given an actual Civil War medical case of a soldier that you are responsible to treat.

Grades 5-8: Don't Feed the Bully

You need a book to assign for class reading. Don't Feed the Bully has been shown to be a great choice! 86% of sixth grade boys who said they don't like reading, in a recent study,* finished Don't Feed the Bully, and called it their favorite or equal to any book they had ever read. Over 90% of all students finished the book and over 75% said it was their favorite or equal book. Plus, the topic of bullying in a novel that is funny, fun, and accessible creates a million teachable moments in each lesson.

Then after reading the book to have a discussion with the author on writing, the genre of the hard boiled detective, and bullying.

"Students have been given information about bullying in the past. Using a novel about bullying, and having the author speak to them about it, may have had more of an impact on what bullying is. Also, in the book, the bully wasn't a big brute, but a little wimpy kid. I think it gave my students a different perspective on who does the bullying." Carol Adams, grade six teacher, Arlee Elementary

Brad Tassell's bullying presentations are known for bringing huge laughs, music, magic, and responsible information on bullying. Including, simple steps to moving the bully target, creating empathy, and taking responsibility for violence.

This program is stripped down to discussing in-depth the important topics in the book and it's concept. There will still be lots of laughs because as a 22 year veteran of the comedy stage, Brad can't help it!

Each student will be responsible for having questions ready to ask. One related to bullying and the other related to writing, authorship, literature, or the genre of the detective novel. Plus, the use of simile, metaphor, and analogy to enhance meaning and humor.

Brad will have lots of questions too.

This is a not to miss learning opportunity for incredible growth right off the school year bat.

“In a nutshell: Don't Feed the Bully is an important self-help book for pre-teens that is cleverly disguised as a hilarious, fictional novel. Don't Feed the Bully provides practical advice to children on the extremely important topic of bullying. Yet it delivers that advice in a humorous, captivating plot that makes putting the book down nearly impossible. I urge educators to adopt this as required reading for your middle-school children. Doing so would be a major step forward in takling the serious problem of bullying, which continues to lead to escalating violence in our schools.” Barnes and Noble.com reviewer, 5/12/2007 *****

The book will be mailed out to arrive as early as possible, the fee for the conference will be due on arrival of the books.

Learn about math and other cultures by taking on MAGPI’s Math Game Challenge! Have your students take on the role of educator and have them teach their peers about a math game from another country. Each participating school will be tasked with demonstrating a math game or numerical challenge from another country to other schools on the videoconference. Students will be charged with putting together a handout that explains the game, along with a materials list, that can emailed to other participating schools ahead of time. Each school will have 10 minutes to present their game/challenge and lead their peers in the game. You’re welcome to present more than one game during the program - - especially if they are ‘quick’ group games. Once you register your school for the project, you will need to email Heather Weisse Walsh with the game(s) your school wants to present as part of the challenge. This way, we can ensure that the same game is not presented multiple times in the same age category. Your game selections are due on 10 days before the event. Your handouts are due 5 days before the event.

One of the eight United Nations Millennium Development Goals agreed upon by the world’s countries and leading development institutions is to reduce by half the number of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation by the year 2015. This six month program will introduce students to the facts about the world water crisis, allow students to investigate and support various water-related projects, take an active role in moving the world toward the millennium goal and publicize their efforts through a media project video collaboration.

The project kicks off in celebration of UN Day, with an interactive videoconference featuring an engaging panel of experts that will challenge and motivate students. Following the kick-off, students will begin their own research into issues surrounding clean water, sanitation and hygiene in various parts of the world and select projects they would like to support. Teachers will attend a virtual professional development event with Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center staff that will help them support their students in their clean water action projects and video development projects. To help kick-start their projects, MAGPI and the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center staff will arrange for an interaction (most likely Skype or live chat) for each school with a water project team overseas. Following the implementation of their projects, students will produce a media project such as a video, podcast or Power Point presentation highlighting their efforts and share their projects in a culminating videoconference on World Water Day in March.

This program is a partnership between the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center, MAGPI and the Philadelphia Global Water Initiative.

MAGPI and the Gerda and Kurt Klein Foundation are pleased to announce the 2009-2010 STAND UP. SPEAK OUT. LEND A HAND! Project. We hope that you and your students will be able to join us. This project is free to join, and open to regional, national and international participation.

In the winter of 1945, on the day of her liberation from six years of Nazi rule, Gerda Weissmann clung to life at the end of a 350-mile death march. She weighed 68 pounds, her hair had turned white, and she had not had a bath in three years. She survived with courage, grace and dignity.
Gerda Weissmann Klein, renowned motivational speaker and Holocaust survivor, teaches each one of us about tolerance, understanding and making a difference. Gerda Klein’s spirit helped her survive six years under Nazi rule; through her story, and her unique perspective, she continues to help each one of us to understand the dangers of hate and extremism.

Students involved in STAND UP. SPEAK OUT. LEND A HAND will hear from Gerda during a special interactive videoconference event and then embark upon their own service learning projects. Each participating school will be tasked with designing and implementing a service learning project that combats social issues in their community.

In order to maintain an on-going dialogue over the course of the project, each class will create a wiki page and posting bi-weekly updates on their projects. Once a month, schools will be assigned a partner class who will review and comment on their wiki page (and vice versa). Students will then reconvene via videoconference to share their service learning projects with the Klein Foundation during a celebratory "Project Collaboration Videoconference" in March. We will break schools into smaller groups for project sharing to encourage dialogue among students!
It's a three-month service learning challenge. Are your students ready to STAND UP, SPEAK OUT, and LEND A HAND against extremism and hunger?
MAGPI is pleased to partner with The Gerda and Kurt Klein Foundation to bring you this program. You can find out more information about the project at: http://www.magpi.net/Community/Programs/Stand-Speak-Out-Lend-Hand
