Program Description By utilizing actual parts of the buffalo, Park Rangers will examine the uses American Indians had for the various parts. They will also discuss the importance of the Homestead Act of 1862 and its role in the American Indians life.
Program Format 1. This program begins with a brief introduction to the National Park Service for first time visitors.
2. We then discuss how the Homestead Act of 1862 affected American Indians.
3. We then move into the American Indian uses of the buffalo. This discussion goes back and forth between videos, viewing of actual parts of the buffalo, and discussion.
4. If time allows the discussion can be done where students in the classroom are given pictures of the parts of the buffalo and then they discuss amongst themselves what the parts are used for and present to the class with help from the Park Ranger.
5. Time is allowed for questions and answers.
Objectives The participant will:
-explore the American Indian uses of the buffalo
-engage in discussion about the affects of the Homestead Act of 1862

• Students read a wide range of print and nonprint texts to build an understanding of texts,of themselves,and of the cultures of the United States and the world; to acquire new information; to respond to the needs and demands of society and the workplace; and for personal fulfillment. Among these texts are fiction and nonfiction, classic and contemporary works.

• Understands United States territorial expansion between 1801 and 1861,and how it affected relations with external powers and American Indians.
• Understands how the industrial revolution, increasing immigration, the rapid expansion of slavery,and the westward movement changed the lives of Americans and led toward regional tensions.
• Understands the extension, restriction, and reorganization of political democracy after 1800.
• Understands the sources and character of cultural, religious, and social reform movements in the antebellum period.
Program Length 30-35 minutes, but program can be modified to fit any schedule.
