There has been a tremendous increase in the need to effectively respond to water emergencies. Recent examples include: collapsed bridges, downed airplanes and capsized ships.

The rescue diver, over all other rescue personnel, must have a high degree of confidence and a clear and practical approach to problem solving.
Rescuers are placing themselves in situations where they are without voice communication,
with a limited air supply, under highly stressful, and sometimes adverse conditions.

Against the backdrop of religious, political, and economic changes, Europe in the seventeenth century was a place of dramatic contrasts. Depicting popular subjects ranging from still life, landscapes, portraits, and religious subjects, artists of the Baroque period pursued intense realism in their art. Students will explore paintings by seventeenth-century masters such as Jan van Huysum, Frans Hals, Georges de La Tour, Valentin de Boulogne, and Rembrandt van Rijn. Class discussion analyzes the various elements of the Baroque style that these artists employed in order to create compelling and dramatic works of art.

This program focuses on art from the United States while exploring the theme of patriotism. We investigate how each artwork illustrates a significant moment in the development of American political history and cultural trends, beginning with the colonial period through the American Revolution, Civil War, Centennial celebration, and the U.S. entry into World War I. Artworks shown are by noted American artists such as John Singleton Copley, Emmanuel Leutze, Winslow Homer, and Childe Hassam. Included are portraits, history and landscape painting, sculpture, and decorative arts. While discussing these artworks, students participate in a visual tour of early American history.

Still life is a category of artworks in which the subject is inanimate such, as a bowl of fruit or an arrangement of flowers. In this class, we will look carefully at a variety of still-life paintings and photographs from the seventeenth century to the present-day. Together, we will investigate the ways in which these works of art convey deeper layers of meaning about collecting, moral values, and aesthetics of form through their cultural context as well as through the artist's deliberate selection and arrangement of objects.

Education: Grade(s): 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Adults
Impressionism developed as a major artistic movement in the late 19th as society became more industrialized and urbanized. Impressionist painters were interested in the subjects of a new modern life in Paris, the leisure activities of the middle class, and nature. Their style was revolutionary and aimed to capture the fleeting effects of light, color, and time. Students examine the development of French Impressionism as it corresponds to six major technological and cultural breakthroughs of the 19th century. Impressionist artists featured from LACMA's collection include Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Mary Cassatt.

The purpose of "Climate Change: Real or Myth?" is to increase student's understanding of climate change, and to make students aware of the continuing controversies surrounding the issue of global warming and climate change. This program deals with the fundamentals and latest—up to this week's—scientific findings regarding climate change, it's causes, impacts, doubters, and what we can do about climate change today. This program examines the positions and ideology of those who still cling to the notion that climate change is not real, or not caused by human activities, or is not something to be alarmed about, or is something we can not do anything about—and provides the latest scientific information why these positions are incorrect.
