Program Description
Students will meet Megalodon, the largest marine predator shark that ever lived. They will talk with a paleontologist and learn how they "read" fossil clues. They will look at different types of fossils and learn how fossils are formed. They will learn what fossils teach us about the past.


Program Format
1. This program begins with an introduction to the geologic time line, helping students understand where the Miocene epoch fits in.2. We will discuss Carcharodon megalodon and compare this fierce predator, now extinct, to the modern Great White Shark.3. We will discuss what a paleontologist is, and talking with a member of the museum's paleontology staff to learn how fossils are formed, what they are made of, and how they are created.4. We will explore what paleontologists can learn about the ancient past from these fossils.5. Students will estimate the size of ancient sharks by measuring their teeth.6. Students will brainstorm the various conditions that might lead to extinction of a mighty species like Magalodon.

Program Description
This program focuses on Captain John Smith's exploration of the Chesapeake Bay in 1608. Students will read excerpts from Smith's journal and learn to use his map to identify major landforms and locations of Native peoples. Interactive games allow students to test their knowledge.
Program Format
1. This program begins with an introduction of Captain John Smith as students complete parts of K-W-L chart on the explorer.2. We will read and interpret an excerpt from Smith's journal to determine what he saw on his Chesapeake voyages and how he used his journal entries to create a map of the region.3. We will watch a video of the Sultana Projects re-creation of Smith's exploration of the Chesapeake so we can see first hand what his voyages were like.4. We will examine a replica of Smith's shallop to determine the advantages and disadvantages of this type of vessel as it was used for exploring the Chesapeake.5. We will examine a copy of Smith's original map to identify map elements, landforms, and locations of various Native American tribes.6. Students will use Smith's map to play the game "Chesapeake Millions".7. Students will write their own journal entries and create maps of a favorite place.

Grade 1-2: Discovery Time with Mrs. Goose: Beautiful Butterflies!

Grades 1-2 students will practice using rhyming words in songs and listen to a story about the life cycle of a butterfly. Mrs. Goose will ask questions about the story and share some fun facts about butterflies. Students will interact with Mrs. Goose by discovering mystery rhyming words and using these words to make a future book. They will end their session with a memory game.

Format Grades 1-2

Program Description
*available any time after 9/1/08. It was not until 1920 and the passage of the 19th Amendment that all women in the United States had the right to vote. The debate leading to the passage of this amendment traces its roots back to the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention, but it was in many ways a very local issue. Participants will join a debate between two first-person interpreters, one a pro-suffrage activist and the other an anti-suffrage proponent.
Program Format
First person interpreters from the Cincinnati History Museum will engage students in a pro/con debate over women's voting rights.
Objectives
The participants will:-engage in a debate over the pros/cons of women's suffrage;-explore the factors included in both sides of the debate;-examine the history of women's right in the US.

Participants will examine the tools and skills needed to perform this amazing feat and how surveying directly impacted settlement patterns.

WVIZ ideastream in conjunction with the Cuyahoga County Public Library invites you and your students to participate in the Annual Margaret S. Skiff Children’s and Teen Literature Conference via a distance learning connection. The conference will be held on May 16th at the Cuyahoga County Public Library Administrative Building in Parma, Ohio. WVIZ ideastream will bring the conference to you live and FREE over the state IP Network.
The conference features four outstanding authors and illustrators: Pat Cummings, William Low, John Rocco and Denise Fleming. This is a great opportunity for your English students and art students planning to pursue careers in writing or art to listen to and interact with these successful writers and illustrators.
Plan on your student meeting one, two, three or all four of these talented authors and illustrators. Schools interested in their teachers and students participating in these programs should contact my office by May 13th. Please see the attached time schedule.
For additional information on each author and his or her books, be sure to check the listed websites.

Grade 9-11:1945: Witnesses to War - Holocaust Survivors and Artists

The Temple Museum of Religious Art recently acquired a collection of 45 Holocaust Wall Hangings by artist Judith Weinshall Liberman that visually depict historic maps, scenes and philosophic concepts regarding the history of the Holocaust. The first lesson is a presentation featuring the Holocaust Wall Hangings, including the work “Europe 1945”. The students explore the creative process, interpretation, and explore how an artist honors historical memory. The second lesson is a conversation with local Cleveland Holocaust survivors describing their experiences using his own writings and artifacts. Both lessons analyze how history is interpreted by examining historic documents, eyewitness accounts from Holocaust survivors and shared artistic interpretations of the artist’s works.

Program Format

Lesson I.
1. The presenter from Temple Tifereth Israel greets the class and reviews lesson objectives.
2. The presenter briefly discusses what students discovered from their writing assignments.
3. Summary/Introduction of artist's work. Show wall hangings by the artist and DVD interview.
4. Introduce student writing/art activity.


Lesson II.

1. The presenter from Temple Tifereth Israel greets the class and reviews lesson objectives.
2. The Holocaust survivors participating in the discussion simply share their stories with the students.
3. Students are able to dialogue with the presenters and ask questions.
4. Students will view a number of wall hangings that directly reflect the content of the second lesson.

Grade 5-8: Presidential Folk Art


In a program with educators at New York State Historical Association, students will learn about the political process of choosing a new United States President, learn some interesting facts about former Presidents and political parties, and understand how art can help to teach us about our nation’s history. Students will view the Fenimore Art Museum’s extensive collection of American folk art, focusing on pieces which depict former Presidents and political symbols. Students will learn about the artworks while playing a fun Presidential trivia game with a museum teacher, and they will be led step-by-step through the process of elections, from primaries to the Electoral College.



Program Format:

Students will be welcomed by a museum educator. He/she will introduce Fenimore Art Museum using photographs and video. The educator will show the students objects from the museum’s folk art collections (paintings and sculptures) that depict former U.S. Presidents, political figures, and patriotic symbols. Some examples of artworks students will view include: a painting memorializing George Washington made before 1810; a life-size wooden statue of Abraham Lincoln; a series of life masks of early Presidents including Thomas Jefferson; a Whig party political banner from 1840. The students will view the artworks and learn about how they were made and used, and will learn about the importance of the Presidents and symbols within the artworks. They will also learn about the political process of choosing a President, including how candidates are selected in primaries to how the Electoral College works. At points during the program, students will take part in a series of trivia games where they have an opportunity to interact with the museum teacher.

The MVESC is offering a special program titled: “Remembering Our Heroes”. This will be a multi-point student session for grades 3-5 that focuses on the real meaning of Memorial Day, and writing letters of “appreciation” to our military men and women. Other items discussed include vocabulary, friendly letters, and The Vietnam Veterans Memorial. We will offer this session at specific times from now until the end of the school year. This session is $60.00 per site and includes the Ohio Academic Content Correlations, and Program Extensions (related literature and website list).
