August 2009
Hi, COSI Friend!

Welcome back to a new school year!

COSI spent the late spring and early summer conducting focus groups and having teachers fill out surveys to help us plan our upcoming Experts programs.

We have a better idea now of what teachers want and hope to deliver a really exciting year of programming. The programs will now involve a lot more questions to students from the Experts and a full discussion of the thought challenge during the program.

Questions from students to the Expert will be scattered throughout the show instead of concentrated at the end. We are always open to suggestions, so if you have further ideas for these programs, please email us.

The fabulous teachers that assisted us with our focus groups and surveys were entered to win two free programs. The winners are Dolores McKeever from Academy of Allied Health and Sciences in Neptune, NJ, who won a Surgical Suite: Total Knee program valued at $255, and Taryn Furmato from Hillsborough High School in Hillsborough, NJ, who won an In Depth: Autopsy program valued at $280.

Congratulations to both of these teachers and thanks so much for your help!

Video Visits: Gadget Works & Weather Watch
This is a great time of year to schedule a Video Visit.

You can request these programs when you would like to have them – at least until our schedule fills up. We recommend signing up early!

Video Visits include Gadget Works: Simple Machines (grades 2-6), Gadget Works: Force and Motion (grades 3-6) and Weather Watch (grades 4-7). Weather Watch is getting rave reviews from teachers that have participated in this new show. Students learn about air pressure, fronts and predicting weather while having a great time with hands-on activities that use materials that are shipped to you in advance.

To make a reservation, check our online calendar. Find an open space and then request a ‘show not scheduled.’

Ohio Historical Society Distance Learning Fall 2009 Update

The Ohio Historical Society would like to welcome you to the beginning of the 2009/2010 school year and share updated information with you in regards to program offerings and scheduling procedures. We will continue to offer our programming on a year-round, on-demand basis Monday through Friday.

The mission of the Ohio Historical Society is to help people connect with the past in order to understand the present and create a better future. As a part of that effort, our award winning distance learning programming provides an interactive, informative, and engaging experience that differs from the typical classroom activity by bringing history to life while reinforcing the importance of past events with real life experiences.

Explore a variety of cross-disciplinary programming in our three themed styles.

- Interact with first person characters from the past in our Back In Time series.
- Get the facts from a professional in our Ask the Expert series.
- Test your knowledge of social studies in our So You Know... game show series.

Thanks to the votes and support of teachers, coordinators and educational/technical staff like you, the Ohio Historical Society was awarded the Teacher’s Choice Award by the Berrien County ISD for the third consecutive year as being one of the top Historical Museum/Organization Distance Learning Content Providers in the country.

New for 2009/2010

So You Know the Civil War (premiering Fall 2009)

No other period in our nation’s history has captured our interest like the events of 1861 through 1865. Although this struggle is distant in time, it’s a period that is confusing and complex to interpret. As we observe the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, test your knowledge of the causes, conflicts, and consequences of this era by scheduling – So You Know the Civil War.

Your students will compete against each other as they answer questions about the people, places, legislation, battles and events of this War Between the States.

Show what YOU know about the Civil War by scheduling, So You Know the Civil War

So You Know the 1960s (premiering Spring 2009)

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1960s as we test your knowledge of the people, places, news, events, and pop culture of the 1960s

Check back with us throughout the school year for new programming. Feel free to send us your recommendations for future programming topics.

Pricing for our presentations will remain $75 for Ohio schools/groups and $130 for out-of-state schools/groups. We request at least 2 – 3 week notice for all reservations.

Grades 7-12: Swine Flu: Pandemic or Hysteria

Swine Flu: Pandemic or Hysteria?

In the recent months, the outbreak of Influenza A virus subtype H1NI, also known as the Swine Flu captured the headlines as the effects of this virus spread across the globe. As reports of confirmed H1N1 cases steadily increased around the world, the UN’s World Health Organization responded by expressing concern over a potential world-wide flu pandemic, citing the outbreak at a “Phase 5” level of alert (out of 6). “In announcing the notching up of the alert level to Phase 5 last night, WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said it was a signal to Governments and to the private sector that preparatory actions should now be undertaken with ‘extreme urgency’” (www.un.org). As a result, many schools have taken extra precautionary measures as seen through the number of schools closing where there are confirmed cases or in many scenarios, where there are suspected cases.

In this Rapid Response session, students will have the opportunity to share how H1N1 has affected their local community. As GNG reports live from NYC, with one of the highest confirmed numbers of cases in the US, students will learn about its effects first hand. Students will also delve deeper into the effects of H1N1 by speaking with an expert and learn how they can take better preventative measures against this influenza.

Date/Time: Friday, June 5 Middle and High School: 11:00-12:00 PM EDT Cost: $150 or membership price* To sign up, please contact Grace Lau at Grace@gng.org.
