Grades 4-8: Programs from Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum


Life at Sea (4th-8th grade)

Experience what life at sea was like for the brave sailors who served aboard the USS Intrepid. Students will be historians and interpret primary sources including WWII artifacts, photographs, and testimonies from former crew members. Students will write letters to a former crew member telling him what they learned from their program. By uncovering fascinating facts about the daily lives of these sailors, students will gain a profound understanding of what life at sea encompassed.

Take Flight (4th-8th grade)

Transform your classroom into a pilot’s Ready Room! Your students will experience the world of Aviation by discovering Intrepid’s function as a floating airport. Students will uncover the science of flight by engaging in hands on activities that allow them to hypothesize, experiment and theorize on how flight is accomplished. They will also examine the Museum’s historic aircraft comparing and contrasting propeller and jet driven planes. Scientific materials supplied by the Museum will provide a unique experience in the classroom!

Intrepid Journeys (4th-8th grade)

Your students will control the helm of an aircraft carrier on a thrilling exploration of the high seas! Students will follow Intrepid’s historic voyage from Virginia to California during WWII. In this interactive experience, students use primary sources to discover the fascinating situations that Intrepid crew members encountered as they participated in this expedition. Students are immersed in Intrepid’s history by plotting latitude and longitude, discussing natural and man-made geographical features of North America and examining historic photographs and film footage.

Days: Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays throughout the spring

Times: 9:30am, 11:00am and 1:00pm EST

Target Audience: Students in 4th-8th grades

Cost: Early Bird Special of $135.00 if you register by January 31. $150.00 after.

Program Description Outline of Subject Matter for VideoConfere: ''A Change in the Air'':

• Earth’s Atmosphere, components and functions
• Experiment: ‘The greenhouse effect’
• The earth’s past climates
• Factors that influence the earth’s climate
• The atmosphere’s components since Industrialization
• Observed changes and expected changes in the next 100 years
• Pollution: air, water, weather, and ecosystems
• Impacts: dropping water levels, rising sea levels, North & South Poles, Ocean Conveyor Belt, Extreme weather events
• Solutions: “How to reduce my GHG’s!”
Program Format The videoconference includes animated graphics and video. Participants can ask questions throughout the presenation. The videoconconference is concluded with an interactive activity on solutions to reduce pollution and greenhouse gases.
Objectives The general objective of this activity is to make students more aware and proactive concerning their environment, while gathering the three levels of learning: cognitive, sensory, and emotional.

During the activity, students:

Cognitive
Are introduced to the basics and history of the earth’s climate
Gain an understanding of the principle of the greenhouse effect
Make a connection between human activities and an increase of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions

Sensory
Do experiments that explore the greenhouse effect
Become acquainted with the connections between greenhouse gases, global warming and extreme weather events

Emotional
Develop curiosity about the earth’s climate
Hear from students of our changing climate, in other parts of country
Become involved to adopt behaviors that reduce GHG emissions

Program Description A short biographical discussion of William Henry Harrison using powerpoint images leads to a face-to-face meeting with Old Tippecanoe himself. The General, now 40, tells the story of meeting Tecumseh and finally journeying to Prophetstown with a ragtag group of militia and army. After the describing the battle, General Harrison opens the floor for questions.
Program Format 1) Program begins with a powerpoint presentation about the Harrison family and especially William Henry's short biography.
2) A short film presents the essence of the Battle of Tippecanoe.
3) When the camera comes back on, William Henry is there, in full uniform. As a 40 year old man, he tells the story of his meeting with Tecumseh, his training of the militia, his journey north to Prophetstown, and the final confrontation between the army and the natives.
4) William Henry Harrison answers questions.
Objectives -students understand the basic cultural differences underscoring the Battle of Tippecanoe
-students appreciate the reasons why Old Tip and Tecumseh took the actions that led to the battle
-Students come away with a deeper appreciation for history based on the old maxim that truth is stranger than fiction.
-students feel emotionally engaged in the problems of the early settlers and the native peoples.
-students realize the importance of Old Tip in the history of the U.S.
