It is estimated that close to 100,000 people left Europe to take part in the First Crusade. Most of them were peasants, and most never returned home. There were many subsequent crusades, but none could claim the same degree of "success" as the First Crusade, which achieved its objective of capturing Jerusalem.

The character for this session is a peasant, reflecting the often overlooked role of peasants in medieval warfare.

This crusader can discuss his motivations for going on the journey, describe the journey itself, recount the battles and sieges, and reflect on the aftermath.

He is also prepared to discuss all facets of medieval life in order to give an understanding of the background of the crusaders, such as the manor system, agriculture, religion, daily life, gender roles, crime & punishment, warfare, health, family life, social hierarchy, and entertainment.

The students and teacher direct the discussion through their questions. The peasant will have on hand farm tools, weapons, sports equipment, and coins, and can teach them a medieval dance with live music on the bagpipes.

The peasant's home is an accurate reproduction of a medieval interior wall inside a home in the English village of Tintinhull.

Globalization has changed everything, and continues doing so. Globalization has made the world smaller by substituting speed, connection and complexity for distance. It has interconnected everything with everything else in ever more effective and profound ways, linking you to the world. What does this mean for your students and the world?

Globalization 101 begins with a short (2.5 minute) movie that provides a global perspective on the problems of the world. Globalization is then defined and presented within a historical context. Various facets of globalization (economic, technologic, cultural, political, environmental) are gone over. How we measure globalization and where it is taking us are presented. Students are engaged in a discussion of what they think globalization is and what it means for them—in terms of the importance of continuing their education, global competition, jobs, friends and opportunities.

One day, in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln sitting at his desk in the White House in Washington DC , signed a document that fixed the eastern terminus of the proposed rail route at Omaha, Nebraska Territory. Within a short time dirt was flying in Nebraska and California.
Thousands of workers, large numbers of teams, many supply trains, and vast quantities of equipment and supplies were employed in caring this stupendous project forward. Each month the gap between the two construction forces became shorter, and finally , on May 10 1869, after six years of strenuous effort, the rails were joined at Promontory, on the Utah desert.
This endeavor was the 1800's equivalent to the United States putting a man on the moon 100 years later.
This session is loaded with original documents, photos and artifacts from the Union Pacific Museum to provide your students with historical accurate “primary” information. Each teacher will receive a packet of resources and activities to use to prepare students for the connection as well as provide you with “follow-up” support material to help you to continue to explore the building of the Transcontinental Railroad as well as Westward Expansion.

News from Israel can be found in the media on an almost daily basis. Our students, as Americans, often find the news somewhat confusing due to a lack of understanding of life in the Middle East in general, and life in Israel in particular.

Through a review and discussion of Israeli current events, complete with analysis of online media clips and newspaper articles, students will share in the day-to-day Israeli experience. Under the guidance of a Jerusalem-based Israeli educator, students will unravel the intricacies of the Israeli political system, sense the great joys and challenges of Israeli life, and begin to understand Israeli society and the forces that mold it.

Aaron Copland was the quintessential American composer who captured the optimistic spirit and rhythm of his homeland in music and used it in homage to our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. We repeat what was one of our most warmly received programs of last season. Music played: “Fanfare for the Common Man,” “John Henry” and “The Lincoln Portrait,” all written by Aaron Copland.

Connections: American historical and cultural heritage and evaluation of musical elements.
