Gr. 6-12 Culture Shock Series: Latin America

Culture shock is defined as confusion and anxiety experienced by someone upon encountering a foreign environment. This program examines Latin American culture and how it can be new and exciting, as well as very different from the US and Canada. Appearances are sometimes deceiving.

We look at forces that define this group, including strong family ties, climate, love of music and dance, concept of time, and economic and political struggles.

This program contains simulations of everyday situations to demonstrate cultural differences first-hand to students. We show short video snips of real people in Latin America sharing their thoughts about national identity. Students can reflect upon their own surroundings and think about how people of other cultures might perceive them.

This program is available in Spanish with English translation as requested.

Objectives:
Students will:
- learn about culture and customs of Latin America
- see how cultural differences can lead to misunderstandings, humorous situations, and pleasant surprises.
- interact directly with presenters in Latin American in Spanish and English.
- comprehend Spanish narration and learn vocabulary.
- see interviews with real Latin Americans and discuss how you perceive other cultures and they perceive you.

Program format
1) Meet a Latin American student who has lived in the United States and an American who has lived in Latin America.
2) Hear and discuss differences in culture.
3) Discuss how certain customs have developed, and how they affect everyday life.
4) Examine national identity and image through interviews with real people of Latin America.
5) Reflect on your own culture and family traditions.

Gr 1-3 LiveLink: Structures

The LiveLink: Structures program is a hands-on experience that will investigate natural structures, shape, materials, forces and load. Build a square and triangle, and test their strength. Experiment with arch and column strength and discuss famous structures from around the world.

Objectives:
The student will:
• Define a structure
• Identify natural and human built structures
• Build and test shapes used in structures
• Discuss 3-dimensional forms in structures (arches, columns)
• Investigate forces that act on structures (tension, compression, wind, earthquakes)
• Observe and discuss material choice in structures

Program Format
The program style is hands-on and interactive with the following format:
1. Presenter asks an open question about structures,
2. Discussion of natural structures (includes viewing of a turtle on a document camera)
3. Students work with partners to feel forces that act on structures (includes presenter showing many types of forces that act on a structure)
4. Students do a shape testing activity using straws and pipecleaners.
5. Presenter tests an arch bridge and a span bridge with students.
6. Students test a column at their location with educator as a facilitator.
7. Time is allowed for questions and answers.

Gr 5-12 United Nations Myth vs Reality

Purpose of the program is to provide a needed understanding of what the United Nations is and is not. Presenter will look at the formation of the UN in context with WWI, the League of Nations and WWII. Emphasis is on understanding the UN today through the reasons for its creation and how the UN functions today.

A 20 minute interactive background presentation on the United Nations followed by Q&A and getting their ideas on how the UN can better serve their 21st century world.

Objectives

(1) get a better understanding of the United Nations in their world.
(2) become more aware of how the UN actually works and why it has needed to work this way under the UN Charter,
(3) develop a deeper appreciation for the work of the UN

Program format

A 20 minute presentation followed by Q&A. Both components involve the class in discussing the topic. There are several visuals that support the presentation.

- explore changes in state from solid to liquid to gas with a variety of materials when heated or cooled
- understand that gas pressure changes by heating or cooling
- learn about basic cell theory
- learn that an object must push one way to go the other way (Newton's Third Law of Motion)
- engage in a discussion carbon dioxide and it's possible effects on global warming
- develop an appreciation for research into superconductivity and its implications to future energy consumption

Program Format
Time is allowed throughout the workshop to ask and answer questions. We treat video conferences in the same format as traditional science incursions.

1. Program begins with a general introduction and discussion on timezone and weather differences between Australia and your school
2. We discuss liquid nitrogen's temperature and perform a number of demonstrations on gas expansion on heating.
3. Your class now performs the 'expand air' experiment using simple materials supplied by you.Please refer to the supporting .pdf document supplied to you on booking
4. We perform a number of cooling experiments.
5. We discuss the pre-class activities 'supercool water' and 'freeze lettuce' with your class. Please refer to the supporting .pdf document supplied to you on booking
6. We perform demonstrations based on current research using lasers and superconductors.
7. Time is allowed for further questions and discussion of cultural differences.

Gr 9-12 Triumph Over Adversity: A Musical Journey Through African American Poetry

Poetic works by Paul Laurence Dunbar, Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, and other notable African American authors are analyzed and explored in this brand-new videoconference from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Through the videoconference, we will take a look at how musical settings affect the meaning, interpretation and impact of the poetic text. Students will orally interpret various poems, listen to live music performances, and play the role of lyricist as their own poems are set to blues music live during the class.

Participants will have the opportunity to complete several investigations including how electrical current travels, simple circuits, and even construct an electro-magnet. Gr. 5-6 Cause & Effect

Following the chain of events in a story can make readers feel like they are on a rollercoaster – each incident has the potential to lead to a smooth turn or a sudden drop. Students will be amazed by the way a single event can cause a chain reaction that will lead to a conclusion they never expected. Join us as we learn to identify cause and effect relationships, explain how incidents influence future actions and develop our own cause and effect statements.

Program Outline:
1. Review cause and effect
2. Discuss the book The Day Jimmy’s Boa Ate the Wash. Review the chain of events and identify examples of cause and effect relationships from the book
3. Analyze various examples of cause/effect statements (introductory/intermediate), identifying the cause and effect in each
4. Students will develop and illustrate their own cause and effect sentence.
5. Volunteers share statements
6. Come up with a school-related cause/effect statement together
7. Together, use the Cause/Effect Diamante Poem format and interactive to create a cause/effect diamante poem
8. Review/Questions
Discuss the terms:

• Cause: why something happened

• Effect: the event that happened because of the cause; the result

Gr 5-6 Acid or a Base? Understanding the pH Scale

Why does acid rain eat away at limestone and marble? How come most cleaning products contain a base? Answer these questions and more as we explore the pH scale. Students will have a chance to observe hands-on experiments and determine for themselves if each mystery solution is an acid or a base. During our discussion, we will also cover what constitutes an acid and base and characteristics of each.

Program format
1.) This program will begin with a discussion of different types of drinks that the students enjoy

2.) After our discussion, we will talk about how most of these drinks are acidic while others are basic

3.) We will review the vocabulary necessary to understanding the lesson

4.) Students will watch a short video on the pH scale: what it is and the various ways we can test pH

5.) In our first activity, students will be presented with 6 “mystery” liquids which they will try to identify and then determine whether they are an acid, a base, or neutral

6.) Once the identity of the 6 liquids is revealed, students will learn about how acids and bases play a role in our everyday lives

7.) In our second activity, we will discuss how acids and bases are formed, and whether each solution presented would have more hydronium ions, hydroxide ions, or an equal amount

Curious about holidays in a specific part of the world? ISIS can arrange for your group to learn about holidays in these regions: Africa, Central Asia, East Asia, India, Latin America/Caribbean, Middle East, Russia/Eastern Europe, and Western Europe.

The ISIS project, located at Indiana University, works with classroom teachers to design Distance/Distributive Learning programs to complement ongoing curricula and match student grade and special needs. Presenters are volunteer international students and scholars and IU faculty experts who are given preparatory DL training. Holiday programs for the following world regions can usually be arranged: Africa, Central Asia, East Asia, India, Latin America/Caribbean, Middle East, Russia/Eastern Europe, and Western Europe.

ISIS programs are scheduled at times convenient to teachers, class, studio schedules, and presenters, taking place primarily from October to December and mid-January through May 30. Please contact ISIS Coordinator at least 2 to 3 weeks prior to the requested presentation date (whenever possible) to make a program request in order to facilitate appropriate program planning and preparation. Due to the popular demand for this program, we must ask that you please limit the number of requests to 3 per school for this presentation.

Web Browsers…A Look at Food Chains and Webs

This fast-paced, fully illustrated class geared toward fourth and fifth graders is an introductory approach to food chains and webs. Vocabulary investigated includes energy, producers, consumers, carnivore, omnivores, herbivores, community. The transfer of energy is fully described in a class activity, and students will interactively create their own food chains and webs. The class ends with a review game.

Slammin' Joe engages students in a dialog about the practice of slavery in early America.

Gr 1-4 African Folk Tales

Folk stories in Africa are a medium for informal education. It’s the way wisdom is passed on from the older generation to the younger generation. Among the Acholi every evening the children gather firewood to make fire. Elders and children sit around the fire and elders told Folk stories which were passed to them by their elders.

Classes will hear these traditional tales:
• The story of the lost spear
• Mr. Elephant and the Rabbit
• Monkey and the crocodile

Uganda is a land-locked country in east central Africa. The population of Uganda is 35 million people (a little lower than the population of California). Agriculture is the main industry in the country, accounting for 80% of the workforce, with coffee being its largest export. The Acholi people live in northern Uganda and number 1.5 million people. Though English is the main language in the country, the Acholi speak Acholi, a dialect of a regional African language called Luo.

Art of the late 20th and early 21st centuries is vibrant, eclectic, and diverse. Contemporary artists often respond to current issues, themes, and events with which we are familiar, allowing us to view our world through new perspectives. This lesson offers an overview of where we are today in the history of art and invites students to explore, interpret, and engage with the art of their time. The lesson includes exclusive film clips of performance art pieces presented at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Our lessons are highly interactive and participatory learning experiences. Throughout each lesson, our educators engage students with thoughtful questions that stimulate critical thinking. Together with the students, they examine the ideas, cultures, and societies that influenced artists in their creative endeavors. Students are encouraged to construct their own interpretations and understandings of the artwork. Gr. 4-6 Martin Luther King - How Big were his words?

The struggle to change the conditions in America, and to win equal protection under the law for citizens of all races formed the backdrop of Martin Luther King’s short life. It may be hard to believe that less than 50 years ago, America had separate drinking fountains for whites and blacks and colored balconies in movie theaters. Using the book, Martin’s Big Words and spending time sharing the discussing the cultural times, students will gain an understanding of the lasting impact of Dr. Martin Luther King upon our society. His focus on reaching equality through peaceful measures brought lasting impact to the Civil Rights Movement.

1. This program begins with a discussion of Martin's background as a child that shaped his
future determination to overcome the inequality of rights for all.

The program will introduce your students to different techniques to begin their writing whether it is a narrative or informational writing. The program will identify different ways to begin their writing to create interest for their audience. Students will be introduced to how well known authors begin their writing. Using examples, students will create their own story-start based on the provided examples. This is a very engaging and interactive program, with active student participation.

Program format:
The program will begin by reviewing author’s purposes for writing and why a beginning is so important in any type of writing. Students will be introduced to the different techniques to use to capture their audience. Sample beginnings from well-known authors will be used to further understanding of these techniques. Students will be asked to read beginning paragraphs and identify what method the author used. A short modern fairy tale will be shared and each group of students will be asked to write a new beginning using one of the methods. Students will also use photo images to create a story start of each provided example.

Videoconference with a Native Blackfoot Guide in our Lodge at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump World Heritage Site. Each program explores the Buffalo Hunting Culture of the Great Plains, adapted to suit each grade and age group. The program explores the tools and technology necessary for daily life a thousand years ago. Learn how the buffalo provided food, clothing, shelter, tools and even toys to families long ago.

The Blackfoot Guide is surrounded by items used in daily life a thousand years ago in the buffalo hunting culture of the Great Plains. The guide explains each item and through questions and answers compares life long ago to life today. There may be a Blackfoot song or Blackfoot Napi puppet used to share cultural stories and songs. There may be archaeological commentary and discussion with older groups.

The participants will:
- meet a Native Blackfoot Guide and learn a few simple Blackfoot words
- learn about the buffalo hunting culture of the Great Plains, prior to european contact with North America
- learn about the tools and technology necessary for daily life long ago

This distance learning program will focus on the origins of several different holiday traditions, along with some unique to the Panhandle. Owls are important top predators that use their adaptations to survive in their ecosystem. While owls are similar to other raptors they do have many differences. Even among owls different species can vary greatly, many owls for many habitats.

The Lee Richardson Zoo's Distance Learning Studio offers a multitude of environmental programs to students all over the nation. Our programs always include 2-4 live animals. However, we are currently unable to give programs from actual exhibits around the zoo. If you would like to know which specific animals will be used in your program, please contact the Distance Learning Coordinator directly.

Program Format
1. Begins with a discussion of Birds of Prey (aka Raptors) and their various characteristics/adaptations.
2. Discussion of a nocturnal owl and identify the adaptations that the students notice or know of.
3. Discussion on a diurnal owl and the different needs between the two. Continue with adaptations of owls.
4. Discussion of a falconiforme (falcons and relatives) and discuss the differences between owls and falcons.

It's September, and you need a book to assign for class reading. Don't Feed the Bully has been shown to be a great choice! 86% of sixth grade boys who said they don't like reading, in a recent study,* finishedDon't Feed the Bully, and called it their favorite or equal to any book they had ever read. Over 90% of all students finished the book and over 75% said it was their favorite or equal book. Plus, the topic of bullying in a novel that is funny, fun, and accessible creates a million teachable moments in each lesson.

Then after reading the book to have a discussion with the author on writing, the genre of the hard boiled detective, and bullying.

Brad Tassell's bullying presentations are known for bringing huge laughs, music, magic, and responsible information on bullying. Including, simple steps to moving the bully target, creating empathy, and taking responsibility for violence.

K -2 Hardtack’s TITANIC Adventure!

Hear the adventurous tale of Hardtack-the-Mouse as he sets sail for America aboard the R.M.S. Titanic! We’ll retrace his trip as he meets the friendly (and not-so-mouse-loving) people in first, second, and third class, all while experiencing the sights and sounds aboard the “unsinkable” ship. Then we’ll join Hardtack as he survives the ship’s sinking aboard a lifeboat and eventually makes it safely to New York City!

Program Format
1. Students will hear the story of TITANIC’S maiden voyage as experienced by Hardtack-the-Mouse.
2. Students will track the voyage from Europe to the United States in Hardtack’s photo journal.
3. Students will listen and dance to music from the period.
4. Story ends with an explanation of how Hardtack’s tale compares to the real story of TITANIC’S maiden voyage.
5. Program concludes as students make their own TITANIC postcard.

We’ll start with animals and determine exactly what they are trying to ‘say’ with the colour of their feathers, fur, skin or scales. We’ll use live (seasonally dependent) and preserved specimens as well as images and videos to demonstrate some of these adaptations while discussing what they mean and how they are interpreted. We’ll also explore the connection between flower colours and animals that are attracted to them. Finally, depending on the time of year we’ll take a few minutes to talk about changing leaf colour.

Gr 6-11 Become an Ambassador for the United States

The Ambassador Program offers two semester-long projects for elementary, middle school and high school students.
The Research Project
Students on both sides of the ocean will meet regularly to compare research conducted on selected topics. The final re-sults will be presented to each other in an innovative and creative format at the end of the first semester.
The Community Service Project
Students from both sides will combine their efforts, skills and access to form a service group. Throughout the course, students can discover interests and talents as well as build skills and confidence in both themselves and their class-mates.
The Akoma Ntoso Cultural Center, along with the generously donated Telepresence equipment from Polycom Corpora-tion, enable students on both sides of the ocean to connect on a very real level, face to face, culture to culture, and dis-cover for themselves their commonality. Our cultural exchange programs have inspired students and teachers on both continents to see new and unique ways of learning and sharing. The Ambassador Program develops cultural awareness, relationships and practical experience in putting knowledge to work in the service of one’s peers abroad. Our hope is that this program will be a first step towards the students becoming lifelong global citizens.

Your mission: To investigate the variety of fishes that has infiltrated the Pacific and report back to headquarters. Join the FBI (Fish Bureau of Investigation) as they discover the diversity and range of Pacific Ocean fish. During this program students will explore fish identification methods including identifying fish habitat, size, shape and color. Students will learn about fish commonly found in the kelp forests of Southern California as they investigate who fishnapped agent sculpin!

As FBI agents your students will have the unique opportunity to dive deep into the kelp forests of Southern California and investigate many "suspects"!
The class will include the following:

Introduction: The students will be notified that an agent from the Fish Bureau of Investigation has gone missing and it is their duty to find her. One fish at a time, students will eliminate fish that are not the “fishnapper” using the following guidelines.

- Shape: A “guest speaker” will give the students an overview on fish shape and they will cross off all fish that do not fall into the correct category.
- Where it lives: A “guest speaker” will give the students an overview on where the “fishnapper” may be living in the water column. The students will cross off all fish that do not fall into the correct category.
- Size: A “guest speaker” will give the students an overview on sizes of fish and they will cross off all fish that do not fall into the correct category.
- Color: A “guest speaker” will give the students an overview on fish color and they will cross off all fish that do not fall into the correct category. When they are done crossing off the final few fish they will have the answer to the mystery of who fishnapped the FBI agent!
- Wrap up: Towards the end of the program students will be challenged with a second mystery. We will virtually travel to the North Pacific, Tropical Pacific and back to Southern California as we look at the different fish that live in each of these regions. Students will use what they have learned to solve the second mystery.

2. Students will have the opportunity to ask a marine science educator about sharks or other Aquarium residents.

Fall is in the air, and Muskingum Valley ESC is spotlighting the following student sessions…

Boo-ti-ful Pumpkins (available upon request) (grades 2-3)

Students will examine various math concepts in this “fall themed” video conference lesson. Using a pumpkin the instructor will facilitate an interactive student lesson on circumference and estimation. Student groups work collaboratively to explore the mathematic concepts and to explain their methods of achieving the answer. Appropriate literature is used to solidify the topics explored. All the fun of fall…WITHOUT THE HUGE MESS!!

Citizenship: It's Your Right! (available upon request) (grades 3-6) GREAT addition to “Constitution Day” activities! This distance learning event looks at many different aspects of citizenship. Students will explore the rights and responsibilities of citizens, the branches of the United States government, and patriotism.

Where the Buffalo Roam (available upon request) (grades 4-5) Students will investigate the ways in which the Native Americans relied on the buffalo for their survival. Shared discussions, videos, literature, and an interactive game will show students how valuable this resource was in their lives. Don't miss out on this fall event!

Living in a New Land: The Pilgrims Meet the Wampanoag Tribe (available upon request)(grades K-2) PERFECT addition to any Thanksgiving activity!
This program looks at why the Pilgrims chose to come to the new world, and the settlement they made in the American wilderness. Students will use various reasoning skills to determine the challenges that they faced, the tribes they met, and the hardships they endured. Students will compare and contrast cultures for a better understanding of the life and times during the 1600’s.

Coming to America: The Colonization of Jamestown and Plymouth (available upon request) (grades 3-5) Use as a supplement to your Thanksgiving themed lessons! This program explores the first English settlements in America: Jamestown and Plymouth. By viewing this program students will discover who the colonists were, from where they came, how they crossed the ocean, and the things they did to create settlements in the American wilderness.

Despite the number of times we've seen the words "Islam" and "Muslim" splashed across our headlines, what do we really know about the Islamic culture and faith? What are the central tenants of this religion that has 1.3 billion people- 20% of the world's total population- faithfully practicing?

Students will learn about the pillars of Islam first-hand from a practitioner of the faith and the influences Islamic culture has had in shaping our modern world. Afterwards, students will share their (mis)conceptions about the religion and draw comparisons of shared values in their own lives.

Videoconference Format

The following outline briefly describes the different components of a typical videoconference session for students:

1. Introduction: The GNG facilitator opens the videoconference and thanks the students from all participating schools. The facilitator also gives a general breakdown of the conference format.

2. Background on Topic: The GNG facilitator will provide a short background on the topic to be discussed. This presentation will include videos and other visuals to enhance the learning experience for the students.

3. Interactive Student Dialogue: Students will begin by responding to the GNG facilitator's questions about the program topic for the week (sample questions from all participating schools will be provided for each videoconference that directly relate to the topic of the day). Students will then pose questions and comments to one another and engage in direct dialogue about the topic. This exchange will constitute the majority of the session. .

4. Conclusion: The facilitator thanks all teachers and students for participating and allows all schools to make closing remarks. Lastly, the facilitator reminds students to prepare for the next session.

Gr 4-12 Mexican Fiesta Dances: Day Of The Dead

In Mexico, Fiestas are a form of national recreation celebrating many different aspects of culture and society. This program challenges learners with different Fiesta dances relating to the theme of life/ death, tying into a focus on the Day of the Dead. During the program, students will learn about and try variations of traditional dances including the “Dance of the Little Old Men” (Los Viejitos), the "Dance of Los Voladores-Dance of the Flyers" as well as creative dance with the “Hand Waving Dance” (a preparation ritual done in cemeteries and at the ofrenda); and the “Skeleton Dance”. Emphasis is placed on how each dance/activity embodies a specific message or concept inherent to the Fiesta.

About the presenter: Marc Kotz began dancing and acting in his early teens- over thirty years ago. Since that time he has performed and choreographed internationally. Marc earned a B.A. in Performing Arts from Empire State College in NYC and an M.F.A. in Dance/Choreography from the University of Iowa (as an Iowa Arts Fellow). He has taught for a total of 12 years at the college level, delved into the field of Living History and Interpretation, and currently directs Born 2 Move Movement Adventures, an organization that encompasses educational, health/fitness, and artistic programs or projects that utilize movement as their essential medium.

Gr 4-5 A Voyage into the Past: The Fur Trade in the Early 19th Century-FREE for the Month of September

Students will join voyageurs and fur traders in the year 1804 as they travel to what is now Minnesota to trade their goods with the Ojibwe American Indians in exchange for furs.Students will examine the traditional Ojibwe way of life; analyze historical paintings and artifacts from the fur trade to discover how European fashion fueled global trade networks.

Program Format:
1. Introduction of the fur trade, the North West Fur Company, and 1800’s fur trader John Sayer.
2. We then discuss the European fashion of beaver fur hats and the system of global trade that supported it.
3. Then students then explore the process of traveling in canoes to what is now Minnesota, and building a fur trade post.
4. Students then learn about the Ojibwe American Indian tradition of following the resources available in each season.
5. Concluding with a comparison of American Indian and European contributions to the Great Lakes Fur Trade.

From desert to savanna to jungle, Africa is a large and varied place. We will explore these different habitats and the animals that live there. From big to small, how do they survive in very different places? What’s the difference between an African and Asian elephant? Which camels can be found in Africa? What are the largest land animals? This program can be varied from Kindergarten all the way up to 6th grade. Like all of our programs, it can be adjusted to fit any age group.

The Lee Richardson Zoo's Distance Learning Studio offers a multitude of environmental programs to students all over the nation. Our programs always include 2-4 live animals. In 1684 Margaret Mattson was accused by her neighbors of being a witch. This program is a re-creation of what would be Pennsylvania's first and only witch trial. There had been many witch hunts in Europe, and many were put to death. As this is the first time anyone has been accused of witchcraft in Pennsylvania, it is a very serious matter for Governor William Penn to consider. The outcome of this trial will affect everyone who lives in the colony. This is an interactive program, with William Penn presiding over the trial. Margaret Mattson should be portrayed by a teacher. Witness testimony is provided by students. All other students serve on the jury.

students examine the relationship between earthquakes, volcanoes and the boundaries of tectonic plates. They will explore the causes of earthquakes and formation of volcanoes and the impact on the geology of an area.

Program format

Gr 6-12 Bullfighting: The Pride & Pain

Each year in January the best bullfighters in Colombia and across Latin America come to the Manizales Fair for the famous Corrida de Toros. Others come to protest this long-standing tradition. We introduce you to a genuine bullfighter along with the tools of his trade. He tells you about the tradition, training, and dangers involved in becoming a professional bullfighter. Breathtaking videos and images as if you were sitting in the plaza along with the crowd. But all is not fun and games - a growing voice around the world feels this tradition should be stopped. We give you the information firsthand and let you decide if this tradition is worth the pain. Information provided for those who wish to voice their opinion.

Objectives: Students will:
- learn about the bullfighting tradition from a real Colombian bullfighter.
- learn how training has affected his life.
- interact with the bullfighter in Spanish.
- comprehend Spanish narration and learn vocabulary.
- discuss this controversial topic with classmates and teacher after the session.

Join the ECOESC as we present a 45 minute interactive videoconference about our Nation’s most important document, the United States Constitution. We will learn about how our government was created and the set of rules that we live by. Students will learn about the three functions of government by sorting tasks into executive, judicial, and legislative groups.

It's important to study the Constitution in school to know and understand a little about our government, because we live in a democracy that everybody has to participate in. It's even more important to understand that the Constitution is very much alive today and it affects our lives every day and it affects kids' lives every day.

It's not just a historical kind of a dry, boring subject in school. This is something that affects us every time we go to church or read the paper or we talk on the telephone, or we go on the computer. The Constitution is, in an indirect way, setting the guidelines for a lot of those activities that are really important to us.

Friendship and Respect (available upon request) Building student citizenship skills through respect are an important component of any classroom setting. Students will look at gaining and giving respect to each other through interactive literature extensions. The perfect distance learning event for building friendships in the new school year.	K-3

Citizenship: It's Your Right! (available upon request) GREAT addition to “Constitution Day” activities! This distance learning event looks at many different aspects of citizenship. This distance learning event looks at different aspects of citizenship traits including honesty, self-assurance, respecting the rights and responsibilities of others, persistence, patriotism, and obeying laws. Boo-ti-ful Pumpkins (available upon request) Students will examine various math concepts in this “fall themed” video conference lesson. Using a pumpkin the presenter will facilitate an interactive student lesson on circumference and estimation. Student groups work collaboratively to explore the mathematic concepts and to explain their methods of achieving the answer. Appropriate literature is used to solidify the topics explored.	2-3

Coming to America: The Colonization of Jamestown and Plymouth (available upon request) Use as a supplement to your Thanksgiving themed lessons! This program explores the first English settlements in America: Jamestown and Plymouth. By viewing this program students will discover who the colonists were, from where they came, how they crossed the ocean, and the things they did to create settlements in the American wilderness. Students will compare and contrast these 2 colonies for a better understanding of the life and times in early America.	3-5

Living in a New Land: The Pilgrims Meet the Wampanoag Tribe (available upon request) *PERFECT addition to any Thanksgiving activity!* This program looks at why the Pilgrims chose to come to the new world, and the settlement they made in the American wilderness. Students will use various reasoning skills to determine the challenges that they faced, the tribes they met, and the hardships they endured. Students will compare and contrast cultures for a better understanding of the life and times during the 1600’s.	K-2

Where the Buffalo Roam (available upon request) Students will investigate the ways in which the Native Americans relied on the buffalo for their survival.
